Hurricane Scares: The Ida Story

    The winds were picking up. Darkness filled the room. With a dead phone, the only thing left to do was twiddle my thumbs.

    After causing much damage in Louisiana, Hurricane Ida looked to make Mississippi its next victim. Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Louisiana on Sunday, Aug 29, 2021. There, it featured wind speeds of up to 150 mph with air pressure a minimum of 930 millibars. On Monday, Aug 30, the hurricane decreased to tropical storm status and crossed into southern Mississippi and was in northern MS by the evening.These turbulent conditions caused widespread power outages starting at 5 am Monday morning. More than 100,000 Mississippians were without power. My family included. Trees were knocked down and buildings were damaged and some even destroyed.

Severe flooding and heavy rainfalls. Preliminary reports show the hurricane impacted 184 roads and 53 bridges, with unconfirmed reports of 164 homes impacted and 6 “destroyed”. The Mississippi River near New Orleans even experienced reverse flow. The river rose 7 ft in Belle Chasse as a result of the storm surge.
