Flash Flooding in the Lower Hudson Valley, NY

I had just come back from visiting my relatives in Minnesota over the 4th of July week of 2023. The day after I got back, which was the day before the start of my summer volunteering job at a camp, it rained for over a day. On July 10th I found out that the camp would be closed for the week, and the next day I found out the camp would be closed for the rest of the summer. The place I spent all my childhood summers was destroyed in one day.

Over July 9th and July 10th thunderstorms with heavy rains passed through the Northeastern U.S. Warnings for flash flooding had been put out earlier, but had been upgraded to a Flash Flood Emergency. There was between four to nine inches of rainfall in three hours. Roads and the Metro North train tracks to the city got washed out. Roads, bridges, and sidewalks got destroyed and the estimated damage was millions of dollars.

Many rivers flooded, including the one that ran through the camp. This flooding completely destroyed all of the boardwalks and bridges over the river and swampy parts of the camp. The damages were too severe to keep the camp open.

Luckily, my house and town weren't that affected by this storm, but a few months later in September, my town got flooded by Tropical Storm Ophelia.
